The price to move you car or motorcycle, just went up again. Auto Shipping Companies state that with the cost of fuel rising and the economy slumping, the cost of moving anything in a tractor trailer is going up and up and UP!!!! The fact that the insurance costs are now out of control as well have made finding a transporter very hard. Those that are on the road have now decided to take only the best paying jobs and leave the “cheap-o’s” where they sit!

In fact, the snowbirds of Florida were sitting waiting for a carrier to pick up their cars and they found that these carriers are out of business. If you want your car moved, pay a fair rate is what the drivers tell you. I know the economy is bad, but if you are not willing to pay a fair rate for the vehicle to be moved, they are telling you to drive it yourself as they will not subsidize the fuel costs out of pocket for you or anyone else as they cannot anymore. So, when you hear a rate that is a hundred dollars more than you thought, let it be known that this is the fuel surcharge and the insurance surcharge and NOT just a few more bucks in the drivers pocket! He is still making less than he was a year ago for the same trip!

This is the advice I can giving you and your free to take it or leave it. Very simple choice and I only advise on this blog… You always make your own choices who to hire. Auto shipping companies want your business but, they cannot fill the tank on hope!

Okay I am going to write a little bit about the difference of having your car or motorcycle transported inside and enclosed style trailer or strapped on an Open Car Carrier. Lots of people think there is no real difference as, they both get the vehicle transported from one point to another.

There is nothing further from the truth! Enclosed transporters are not just for the rich or high end cars that are more expensive then they should be. If you notice the first thing that is different from an open and enclosed transport is, the car on the open trailer is exposed to the elements. I do not mean just the rain. I mean the road tar and grime. This stuff is just killer when it gets on the paint and gets baked in by the sun during travel. Not to mention the bugs. They get stuck in places that you never dreamed they could! Most auto shipping companies will tell you to use their enclosed carriers and assure you there can be no damage at all. This is true 99% of the time.

So you are thinking, this is not so bad, I can wash the car. It is not that bad. This is where you would be very wrong. You will need at least a $150 dollar detail to get it close to the way it was. Transporting your vehicle in an enclosed trailer by a company that specializes in enclosed transportation is not hard to fine and surely not that much more expensive. If the cost of a decent detail job is $150 dollars and loss of your car for a day, then how about just a hundred more for an enclosed transporter? That is the general price difference. Since the cost is actually not that much more, what other major differences are there that would help me make my mind up?

Well, as an example, having your vehicle inside the trailer will ensure there are no rock scratches or rubs from other cars. There is no way that a window or windshield gets broken. This happens a lot more then people realize. Windshield cracks are actually very common and the transport company is not going to take liability for that. It will be right on the contract you agree too. The reason an enclosed transporter does not have that clause is simple. There is no way is could be broken by any road debris popping up and hitting it. That fact needs to be considered when looking at all the auto shipping companies. It is the dirty little secret that you should know ahead of time. Now you are fully informed and that will help you with your decision.

There are lots of different things you should know before you embark on shipping your vehicle. Many of the auto shipping companies that will move your vehicle, either car or motorcycle, have a few issues that always seems to delay the timely delivery. It drives them completely crazy when these issues pop up. WHY? It costs them money. Time is money and being prompt on delivery is important to all the auto shipping companies so as they keep customers happy and they earn the amount they need weekly to survive.

Many times customers will forget that traffic is a big factor in getting to a location on time. Not to mention all the road construction that is going on all over the Country. Yet, weather is still the biggest factor because, people forget how to drive safely when it rains and trucks must always drive slower in the rain.

The company that handles your move will always ask that you be ready and on time for the delivery or the pickup of your vehicle. It is important to try and keep this time schedule because, they have DOT regulations that they are required to follow as well. So, when they ask you to do the inspection report to look for scratches and dents that are pre-existing on the vehicle they are moving or have just moved for you, time does matter to then trucker.

You will get an inspection report from the driver that was signed on the pick up on the car or motorcycle. It will be signed by the person that handed the keys over to the driver for loading on the truck. This report will be detailed and show any prior damage, if any, and thus you will know for sure it was clean. The driver will have the original and a copy that you will get on delivery that needs to be signed.

Sometimes you need to ask exactly what door to door means for the shipping of your motorcycle or car. It may not mean coming down your narrow street that has a vehicle weight restriction sign that you never noticed before. Door to door means within a few miles of your exact delivery address and your pick up is subject to the same meaning. Please remember these are tractor trailers that are very long and very tall. They generally do not go down side streets at all. This means making sure you know a large parking lot, like a shopping center is close by that you can meet the truck at.

Having you as a happy customer with their vehicle moved in a timely fashion is a priority. Vehicle shipping companies depend upon you to give them good reviews at the end of the trip so others will call them too.

Tips on protecting yourself on claim damages if there should even be any:

Ensure the car carrier or motorcycle mover has insurance equal to or greater than the value of your vehicle.

Before allowing the vehicle shipping company to load the motorcycle or car, make sure the inspection report is filled out completely and you have signed it and received your copy. Keep the report until delivery time and assure it is the same as signed on loading.

When your vehicle is delivered, Ensure that the condition of the interior is the same and has no water damage from rain. This will not be on the initial report most times.

Check the vehicle mileage and ensure it was not driven and was actually transported on the truck. Companies have been known to drive the vehicle many miles because it is cheaper then trucking it.

If there is any disputes, you must call the company owner first. Then you need to file a claim with their insurance company and if all else fails, you can go to the U.S. Department of Transportation and file against the company bond.

This all would be in the worst case and not the normal move. Most of the time, moves of vehicles go without issue and you are just another happy person with their car or motorcycle moved. But, if you are forewarned then, you are forearmed and that is being a smart consumer.
